Optical Remote Sensing of Methane: The solvable problem
Register TodayOptical Remote Sensing of Methane: The solvable problem
Methane, the simplest hydrocarbon, is a potent greenhouse gas. This small molecule, a known byproduct both of agricultural decomposition and in petroleum industries, is odorless and invisible to the human eye. Thus, its detection poses a significant challenge. Enter commercially available remote sensing technologies that can “see” this formerly “unseen” gas.
This presentation will outline the scope of the methane problem, especially with regard to human-caused leaks, highlighting how advanced optical imaging, such as LIDAR, can be used both to visualize and quantify methane leaks from a distance. While recent regulatory shifts present complexities, these technologies remain vital for ensuring safer operations in landfills and in the oil and gas industry. Discover the important role remote sensing plays in addressing this critical environmental issue.
Our June speaker Dr. John Di Benedetto is the President and Chief Technology Officer of Condor Calibration Services, a California-based startup specializing in cutting-edge remote sensing solutions. He also holds a position as a Research Professor at the Desert Research Institute in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Previously, Dr. Di Benedetto served as a Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff at the NNSA Special Technologies Laboratory. His work is centered on developing innovative technologies for the detection of greenhouse gases, as well as other harmful gases and solids, in various environments, including urban areas, industrial sites, and agricultural lands. A recognized leader in the field, he has secured one patent and has several publications related to the calibration of methane plumes.
Location: Our speaker will present in person at Community West Bank conference room at 445 Pine Ave. off Hollister Ave. in Goleta, and on Zoom. When you register, we send a confirmation email containing Zoom data, directions to the in-person location and meal details.
About our Meetings:
