Applying AI to Systems Engineering: Training the Tools
Model Based Machine Learning (MBML) applies AI/ML to system development and modernization, such that the systems engineering environment/capability is being trained as it’s being used. By way of analogy, imagine that you had a hammer that was learning how to be a hammer, while being used by a master carpenter. Such that, when the hammer is handed to an apprentice carpenter, the hammer knows the difference between a nail and a screw, and how not to bend a nail or smash a thumb.
In the case of MBML we’re integrating AI/ML techniques into Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) Model Based Engineering (MBE) tools (i.e., the hammers), so that the MBE tools are getting smarter as they’re being used. This also allows these tools to capture and preserve the corporate, program, and most critically, the tribal knowledge acquired from its human users as they perform their systems engineering actions.
In much the same way that smart phones observe and learn from previous text messages and associated recipients (and misspellings) and use that historical information to make suggestions, AI-enabled COTS MBE tools will be able to observe, classify, recommend, and predict.
Our May speaker Tom Strelich, is a Digitial Engineering Fellow and has extensive experience with systems engineering, immersive 3D visualiztion, AI/ML, advanced software architectures, modeling and simulation, and technology development/transfer. He is also an award-winning novelist and successful playwright with multiple off-Broadway productions and national awards (No kidding!).
Location: Our speaker will present in person at Community West Bank conference room at 445 Pine Ave. off Hollister Ave. in Goleta, and on Zoom. When you register, we send a confirmation email containing Zoom data, directions to the in-person location and meal details.
About our Meetings:
- Our monthly meetings are now hybrid meetings! You may attend either in person or via Zoom. Some speakers will be presenting in person and others remotely. When you register, you can add payment for lunch if you plan to attend in person. Lunch will be a buffet with a selection of sandwiches from Three Pickles, chips and cold drinks. If you have special dietary concerns, please contact Cheryl Ebner at [email protected].
- Renew your SEC membership or join SEC when you register, to attend 2024’s meetings with no non-member fee.
- See our YouTube channel, which contains our growing archive of recent presentations!
- Have an idea for a future meeting? Please contact program chair Yvonne DeGraw, [email protected].
